I believe that as a travel writer that I have a responsibility to share not only the best travel tips and destinations but to inform my readers about current policies, trends, or world events that influence travel.<\/p>\n<p>Let me be very clear, I am not advocating for international travel at this time. If anything I am advocating for the exact opposite.<\/p>\n<p>It is best practice to receive your information about the current travel policies of your locale via official sources. If where you live is not allowing any non-essential movement then do please respect these restrictions. I have seen friends and colleagues lose their businesses overnight. Many of my projects scheduled for this year are indefinitely postponed, and I lost my office space in the center of Ljubljana.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t just the small businesses that are suffering. Some of the biggest names in travel have been hit, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2020\/apr\/13\/lonely-planet-closes-its-melbourne-and-london-offices-where-now-for-travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lonely Planet closed offices<\/a> in Melbourne and London, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-51746564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flybe went bankrupt<\/a> in March, <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2020\/04\/28\/tripadvisor-lays-off-25-percent-of-global-workforce-closes-some-offices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TripAdvisor laid off 25% of workers<\/a> last week, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/05\/05\/airbnb-to-lay-off-nearly-1900-people-25percent-of-company.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Airbnb laid off 25%<\/a> of staff just this week and<\/p>\n<p>According to the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/news\/covid-19-travel-restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100% of destinations<\/a> now have restrictions in place. Whether you realize it or not, that is significant. Tourism accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/03\/world-travel-coronavirus-covid19-jobs-pandemic-tourism-aviation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10% of the global GDP<\/a>. In the US, tourism generates $2.6 trillion in economic output and supports 15.8 million jobs. When faced with unemployment numbers over 30 million, you can&#8217;t help but assume half of those jobs also support tourism.<\/p>\n<p>The UNWTO estimates that global international tourists&#8217; arrivals will <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/04\/1062022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decrease 20-30% in 2020 for a potential loss of $30-50 billion (USD)<\/a>. It is estimated that over 75 million jobs in tourism are at risk, the highest risk being in Asia. The numbers are not comforting. There are discussions about what travel will look like in the immediate future through to a post-COVID-19 world.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts are claiming that at the beginning people will choose road trips over plane travel. I can tell you that I have no plans to jump on a plane or train at the moment. When we begin to use these modes of transportation again there will be a shift to using disinfectants, limiting the number of passengers, or even be required to wear a mask.<\/p>\n<p>Active and adventure-style travel will probably play a major role in the coming months as most activities are outside in nature. As they say &#8220;What grows together, goes together&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are also discussions about intentional and <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/how-to-travel-more-sustainably\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable travel<\/a>. It makes sense because these conversations had already begun prior, but you see a global shift and <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@WTTC\/5-ways-tourism-can-support-local-economies-8cc8ded47370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">desire for more immersive and meaningful experiences<\/a>. People want their money to go to the right place and their time to be spent well.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, some of us in the industry are attempting to adapt.\u00a0You might have noticed a few hashtags popping up across social media such as #<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/news\/stay-home-today-traveltomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TravelTomorrow<\/a> or #<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/wearekomodo\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ThankstoTravel<\/a>. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.ae\/lifestyle\/travel\/13-brilliant-tourism-campaigns-reminding-us-to-dream-now-visit-later-1.1000211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tourism boards are encouraging travelers<\/a> &#8220;Don&#8217;t cancel, postpone!&#8221; or &#8220;Visit Later&#8221; in an attempt to encourage those travelers to keep their planned trips, just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afar.com\/magazine\/postpone-dont-cancel-and-other-thoughts-from-travel-industry-leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">postponed to a safer date<\/a>. I think this is a great option if you have the possibility. Some airlines and hotels are accommodating the situation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2020\/apr\/10\/airlines-law-refunds-voucher-schemes-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">while others have not<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Travel bloggers are attempting to salvage their views shifting content from itineraries to <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/the-best-virtual-travel-experiences-for-modern-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtual tourism<\/a>. Some companies are offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/story\/these-virtual-wine-tastings-come-with-a-crate-of-wine-and-a-sense-of-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtual degustations<\/a> or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/magazine\/the-world-at-home\/#upcoming-online-experiences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at-home virtual travel experiences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The truth? We have no idea what will happen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/2020\/04\/how-coronavirus-is-impacting-the-travel-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Everything is speculation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before this pandemic, the travel industry was concerned with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-highlight\/2020\/4\/16\/21216676\/coronavirus-covid-19-travel-vacation-tourism-overtourism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over-tourism<\/a>. The industry was ready for a shift and it <strong>needed<\/strong> it. Travel was quickly becoming very unsustainable as dirt-cheap flights could transport you across Europe for a few days. Cities like Venice and Barcelona were becoming unlivable for locals. In Slovenia, some days locals in <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/ljubljana-to-lake-bled-day-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bled<\/a> were asked not to drive because there were too many tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Read | <a href=\"https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/how-to-travel-more-sustainably\/\">How To Travel More Sustainably?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We know that travel is forever changed.<\/p>\n<p>Now we are presented with a moment to do things better.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Local_Tourism_the_Answer\"><\/span>Is Local Tourism the Answer?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>That depends on who you ask. Some countries completely rely on foreign visitors to sustain their livelihoods. In the Maldives, tourism accounts for 28% of their GDP, in Slovenia, it is around 10%, but in the US it is only around 2.4%. That is a huge difference between countries.<\/p>\n<p>If we might not be able to travel internationally until 2021 or later then what is the solution?<\/p>\n<p>Travel local. Support local tourism so that they will be there when the flights take off again. These are the people who will (for some) represent your home and culture. <strong>Supporting local travel &#8211; wherever you go &#8211; is sustainable travel<\/strong>. If you are passionate about locations abroad check to see if you can buy any products, food, or gift vouchers to continue to support those businesses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2322\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2322\" style=\"width: 1170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2322 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ljubljanaslovenia-24-1440x1080.jpg\" alt=\"ljubljana\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ljubljanaslovenia-24-1440x1080.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ljubljanaslovenia-24-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ljubljanaslovenia-24-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wanderinghelene.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ljubljanaslovenia-24.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I love to act like a tourist in Ljubljana; visiting museums, trying new restaurants, and buying local products.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So maybe I should be shouting &#8220;Support Local!&#8221; rather than &#8220;Travel Local!&#8221; but I feel like travel gets left out of the former&#8217;s rhetoric. It is hard to imagine local travel but I want to reiterate that I am referring to either traveling locally or supporting local businesses while you travel.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting local businesses helps with something called <a href=\"https:\/\/beachmeter.com\/tourism-leakage-does-your-money-contribute-locally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leakage<\/a>. This refers to the revenue that is lost once it goes to a foreign-owned business. This can be a hotel, restaurant, or even a tour company. If the company is foreign-based that directly influences where the revenue and taxes of that company go.<\/p>\n<p>In some places, this is a very serious issue that is negatively affecting local populations who are being used to support these businesses.\u00a0 I have good news though! There is something amazing that happens when you decide to support local businesses.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Local_Multiplier_Effect\"><\/span>The Local Multiplier Effect<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There is this concept in economics called the local multiplier effect. It refers to <strong>the additional economic benefits when money is spent locally<\/strong>. It has been documented that a higher percentage of that money will be recirculated in the community. This can be <em>directly<\/em> through hiring local employees or purchasing local equipment or <em>indirectly<\/em> if that money is spent at another local business. The third way that the money is recirculated is via employees when they spend their money locally.<\/p>\n<p>A study compared chain stores versus independent ones and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amiba.net\/resources\/multiplier-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the results<\/a> were shocking. A chain store will recirculate, on average, only 13.6% of revenue while the independent locally-owned stores average 48%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Independent retailers are returning three times as much to the community compared to chain stores<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from more money circulating locally, other studies show that local businesses contribute to greater income growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nishacharya\/2019\/05\/05\/who-is-creating-jobs-in-america\/#57a4d9a7597d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more jobs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/prosperitynow.org\/blog\/small-businesses-serve-tool-reduce-wealth-inequality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fewer inequalities<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodjobsfirst.org\/corporate-subsidy-watch\/hidden-taxpayer-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">less strain on public subsidies<\/a> that large corporations often benefit from.<\/p>\n<p>And it is not just an economic return that should be the goal of supporting local. A very important benefit is the deep connection that a locally-owned business will have with the local community. Research shows that <strong>a business can influence the well being of a community, contribute to the social capital, and increase population health<\/strong> (Blanchard et al 2011).<\/p>\n<p>There is evidence that the local population is <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/200971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more likely to be civically involved and vote<\/a> when their community is predominantly locally-owned small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting locally-owned businesses improves the entire community&#8217;s wellbeing. If you take a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/tourism4sdgs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for tourism<\/a> you will notice that supporting local improves almost every goal on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism is a powerful tool for bringing people out of poverty and environmental conservation. Across the world, it is documented that tourism is bringing jobs, especially to rural areas, minorities, and women. I guarantee for most people there is at least one if not more activities that you never experienced in your area.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall I visited my hometown and since I haven\u2019t lived there in well over 10 years I didn&#8217;t exactly know a lot of people. Left to entertain myself, I went to Google and literally typed \u201cthings to do in Scranton\u201d and \u201csightseeing in Scranton\u201d just like when I visit a new place. I sat there in my hotel room in shock as I never did any of these things.<\/p>\n<p>The next day I set off to Scranton to visit the Electric Trolly Museum and the Steamtown Historical Site. I even rode on an original electric trolly from 93 years ago on a route that ceased operation in 1954.<\/p>\n<p>I had a great time there and learned about myself, my culture, and my ancestors. You might be surprised at what you find.
